Staying Healthy During Flu Season

Flu season is here and sicknesses are being spread. There are more people getting sick in the fall and winter months than the rest of the year. It is important to stay healthy through these seasons by taking extra precautions. There are the obvious tips such as washing your hands and keeping away from sick people but, you can go even further to help prevent yourself from catching the flu.

To avoid getting sick, first you can eat healthy and vitamin rich foods. Keeping a healthy and balanced diet can boost your immune  system by providing a variety of nutrients and antioxidants. Getting a full nights sleep can also help prevent sickness because lack of sleep can weaken your immune system. Exercise can lower stress, build immune system and help you get a healthy sleep. Reducing stress while sick is important because stress weakens your immune system. Your immune system is the bodies defense mechanism against viruses, keeping it strong makes is harder for the viruses to infect the body and make you sick.

If you do catch the flu or any cold, it is important to stay hydrated because drinking extra fluids while sick can help loosen mucus and prevent fevers caused by dehydration. Inhaling steam in the first stage of illness can reduce the spread of the virus to your upper respiratory tract. Taking medication once sick can also limit the spread of the virus to other people and help your body get over the illness. If the illness is contagious, you should avoid contact with most people to avoid spreading the virus. It takes approximately at least 24 hours on antibiotics to not be infectious so, if you started taking antibiotics you should miss work or school if possible for the rest of that day and, depending on when you first took it, the next day to avoid getting others sick. It is important to stay healthy all the time but especially during flue season.
