Popularity is defined as the state or condition of being liked, admired, or supported by many people. While this may be true, when it comes to high school and teenagers, we all know it means much more than that. Every day we witness someone stepping on another victim just to get closer to the top. But is it really worth it?
Multiple movies have taken an inside look at popularity. Most of them showcase a character the complete opposite of “popular” that is striving to be somebody only to learn that none of it matters. In Mean Girls, for example, everyone was struggling to be the most loved and admired, and we all see where that got them.
There are many different types of popularity that we see floating around our school. They can be friendly, mean, funny, snobby, athletic, and, in some cases, smart. Being popular does not always have to be a bad thing, though. Popularity can come simply from being nice to others and for that, you can be liked. But under most circumstances, popular people are popular for all the wrong reasons, like being pretty or skinny or rich. These standards that make people well known and admired are ridiculous because these are insane expectations that no one should feel the need to comply to.
One thing that people may not realize is that you do not have to be popular to be happy. Popularity is merely a word and it only has strength and meaning if we give it that. You should not do things just to please others. Being confident and outgoing is something that should have more emphasis placed upon it because popularity can easily fade away. The most important thing is to learn to just laugh and have fun because all that really matters is that you enjoy the time you have growing up.
